Adventure racing continues to sweep the Mackay Region

Adventure challenges vary from race to race and participants enter as an individual competitor, pair or as a team. The challenges faced by competitors have caused multisport adventure racing to grow in popularity across the world.

Adventure racing can include mountain biking, kayaking, road cycling, trail running and orienteering.Mackay's ZACH MACH Adventure Challenge, held across an entire weekend includes all of these sporting disciplines.

"Being able to work as a team across many sporting disciplines rather than the emphasis being on individual achievement is what attracts so many people to adventure racing" says Nikki Giles, Event Director for Mackay's biggest Multiport Adventure Challenge: Corry Cycles ZACH MACH.

ZACH MACH Adventure Challenge was established in 2013 following the sudden passing of 18 year old local adventure enthusiast Zach Roberts.

"Peter Lister formerly a teacher at Mackay Christian College where Zach Roberts went to school started Zach Mach Adventure Challenge in memory of Zach" says Nikki.

Since this time, ZACH MACH Adventure Challenge continues to grow in size and popularity with Mackay Isaac Region locals and Adventure Racers from across the nation embracing the challenge.

"Mackay's Pioneer Valley is the perfect playground for an adventure race like ZACH MACH" says Nikki

"The stunning rainforest is a haven for trail runners, Mia Mia is a mountain bike rider's dream, Teemburra Dam is great for the kayak leg and the green cane paddocks that line the sealed roads are a spectacular back drop for road cycling"

The event is held on the 2nd weekend of May. The big one is ZACH MACH Adventure Challenge on Saturday 6 May. Competitors can register for all stages or select any of the 4 disciplines (MTB, kayak, trail run and road bike) as an individual, pair or a team.

"We have lots of corporate teams that enter as well as sporting friends who sign up as a team, the comradery the event creates is so inspiring".

For people wanting to dip their toe in the water and try multisport for the first time and for the younger generations who are the future of adventure racing MINI MACH is held on Sunday 7May.

The short-distance enticer course is for 7years+ and includes mountain biking, trail running and orienteering.

Participants, their families and friends can book a site at Pinnacle Family Hotel and camp the weekend or there is parking available on the day.
